Why Musical Theater Helps Students Grow On and Off Stage

Musical theater can change the way a student sees themselves. Sometimes that change starts with something as simple as saying one line out loud, learning a song they thought was too difficult, or finding the courage to walk onto a stage for the very first time. At JDS Creative Academy, we see those moments happen all the time, and they are exactly why we believe so strongly in the power of arts education.

Yes, musical theater is about acting, singing, movement, characters, costumes, rehearsals, and putting on a great show. But it is also about so much more. Every rehearsal allows students to build confidence, communicate more clearly, work as part of a team, solve problems, take direction, and learn how to keep going when something does not work the first time perfectly. Those are not just theater skills. Those are life skills.

One of the biggest things students gain is confidence. And confidence does not mean that every student suddenly wants to be the center of attention. For one student, confidence may mean singing a solo. For another, it may mean speaking loudly enough for the room to hear them. It might be auditioning for a role, asking a question, trying a new movement, or being willing to make a mistake in front of other people. Every one of those moments matters because students start learning that they are capable of more than they may have believed.

Musical theater also teaches teamwork in a very real way. A production cannot happen with just one person. Everyone has a responsibility, from the performers on stage to the people helping make everything happen behind the scenes. Students learn to listen to one another, support their castmates, respect different roles, take feedback, and understand that showing up prepared affects the entire group. They get to experience what collaboration actually looks like instead of simply hearing someone tell them that teamwork is important.

There is also discipline involved, and that is a big part of the learning process. Lines need to be memorized. Music needs to be practiced. Choreography takes repetition. Cues have to be learned. Students quickly realize that a successful performance comes from consistency, preparation, and being willing to put in the work. They also learn something equally important: mistakes are going to happen.

You forget a line? Find your way back into the scene. Miss a step? Keep moving. Something changes at the last minute? Adapt. Theater teaches students not to freeze when something unexpected happens. It gives them a safe place to problem-solve, think creatively, and keep moving forward. Those are skills they can use in school, in future careers, and throughout their lives.

At JDS Creative Academy, our students also have the opportunity to learn from creative professionals who bring real-world experience into the classroom. Scott Strand, Master Acting Coach and Co-Founder of JDS Creative Academy, directs the Musical Theater Program and brings decades of experience as an actor, director, producer, and educator. Beatrice Galvan, Stage Manager & JDS Studio Editor, brings hands-on production experience to the program, helping students understand the coordination, communication, and behind-the-scenes work that keeps a live production moving. Katie McColm, Artistic Director at JDS Studio, brings her experience in fine art, performance, visual design, sets, props, and costumes into the creative process. Together, they help students see that musical theater is not just about performing. It is about collaboration, storytelling, production, and learning how every creative role works together to bring a show to life.

That is what makes this program so exciting. Students are not simply preparing for a final performance. They are learning how a production is built, how to collaborate with others, how to express themselves, and how to take an idea from rehearsal all the way to the stage.

Our Fall 2026 Musical Theater program begins Wednesday, September 2, from 5:00 to 7:30 PM, with students beginning the process of auditions, casting, rehearsals, and preparing for our Winter Showcase, December 18 through 20, 2026. The program is open to ages 8 and up; all abilities are welcome, and no previous experience is necessary. Everyone gets a part.

Whether a student dreams of performing professionally someday or simply wants a place to create, make friends, build confidence, and try something new, musical theater gives them that opportunity.

Because at the end of the day, we are not just teaching students how to perform. We are giving them opportunities to use their voice, work together, build real-world skills, and discover what they are capable of.
