The Confidence Effect: What Happens When Students Feel Safe to Create

August 20, 20264 min read

There is something really special that happens when a student realizes they are in a space where they can simply be themselves.

They start raising their hand a little more. They share the idea they were unsure about. They volunteer to try something new. They laugh when something does not go exactly as planned instead of shutting down.

And before long, you begin to see confidence show up in ways they may not even notice yet.

At JDS Creative Academy, we see this happen all the time.

Confidence is not something that magically appears because someone tells you, “You can do it.” Most of the time, it is built slowly through experience. It comes from trying something that feels uncomfortable, discovering that it is okay to make mistakes, and realizing that you are still supported while you figure things out.

That is why creating an environment where students feel safe to create is so important.

Whether a student is acting, editing video, writing, performing, learning production skills, or experimenting with another form of art, creativity requires a certain amount of vulnerability. You are putting a piece of yourself into what you create.

That can be exciting, but it can also feel intimidating, especially when you are learning.

What if my idea is not good enough? What if I mess up? What if everyone else is better than me?

Those questions can stop someone before they ever get the chance to discover what they are capable of. But when students know they have room to explore, ask questions, make mistakes, and try again, something begins to shift.

Instead of worrying about being perfect, they can focus on learning.

One of the things we value most about inclusive arts education is recognizing that every student comes into the room differently. Some are naturally outgoing. Others may need a little more time before they feel comfortable speaking up or stepping into the spotlight.

One student may love being on stage. Another may discover that their place is behind a camera, working in an editing room, writing a script, designing something, or helping bring an entire production together.

There is no single definition of creativity, and there should not be one definition of confidence either.

Sometimes confidence looks like performing in front of an audience. Sometimes it is introducing yourself to someone new. Sometimes it is asking for help. And sometimes it is simply saying, “I want to try.”

Those moments matter because the skills students build through creative experiences can travel with them far beyond the classroom or studio.

They learn how to communicate an idea, collaborate with people who think differently, listen to feedback, solve problems when the original plan changes, and keep moving forward when something feels challenging.

Those are not only creative skills. They are skills that matter in school, future careers, relationships, and everyday life.

Through visual and performing arts training, digital media education, creative career building, and workforce development through the arts, JDS Creative Academy gives students opportunities to learn by doing. The goal is not simply to complete a project. It is to give people meaningful experiences that help them discover what they can bring to the table.

And there are so many opportunities coming up to be part of that creativity.

On August 21, our community will come together for Arts Across the Academy, our Spaghetti Dinner and Variety Show Fundraiser. It is an evening filled with performances, creativity, community, and an opportunity to support the programs that make these experiences possible. You can learn more and get your tickets at https://jdscreativeacademy.org/variety-show-fundraiser.

At the heart of it all is something simple: giving people a place to begin.

Because eventually, the student who once said, “I don’t know if I can do this,” starts saying something different.

“Let me try.”

That is the confidence effect.

It is not about being the loudest person in the room or getting everything right the first time. It is about finding your voice, trusting your ideas, and realizing you have something valuable to contribute.

And sometimes, one opportunity to create is exactly where that confidence begins.
