Design, Build, HAUNT! Teaching Students to Create the Scares
As soon as fall rolls around and the nights start getting longer, you can almost feel the buzz in the air—Halloween is coming! And here at JDS Creative Academy, that means one thing: our students are hard at work transforming ordinary spaces into spine-tingling haunted experiences.
But here’s the twist—what looks like a night of screams and thrills is actually a classroom in disguise. In our Haunted Studio Class, students don’t just play dress-up or act out a scene. They roll up their sleeves and dive into the real craft of theater—designing sets, building props, creating lighting effects, and learning how to bring a story to life through atmosphere and performance.
More Than Just Halloween Fun
Yes, the scares are real. The fog machines are running. The jump scares will definitely get you. But behind all the spooky fun, students are gaining valuable skills that last long beyond October. They’re learning how to:
Work together as a team to make something big happen.
Solve problems on the spot when a prop doesn’t behave.
Use technical know-how, from carpentry to sound design.
Step up as leaders and see their ideas come alive.
And let’s be honest… How cool would it be to add “Haunted House Designer” to your résumé?
A Temecula Tradition
For the community, the Haunted Studio Showcase has become a must-see tradition in Temecula. Families come to scream, laugh, and cheer as students show off the worlds they’ve created. For the students, it’s the moment they get to share their hard work and creativity with the audience.
This program isn’t just about a haunted house. It’s about building confidence, creativity, and career-ready skills—whether students dream of working in film, theater, themed entertainment, or design.
So this Halloween, when you walk through the haunted maze at JDS and jump out of your skin, remember—those scares are carefully crafted by students who are learning, growing, and finding their voice as artists.
