The Rise of the Multi-Hyphenate Creative

The creative world has changed, and I love that.

You do not have to be just one thing anymore. You can be an actor who writes. A filmmaker who edits. A producer who understands marketing. A performer who discovers they love what happens behind the camera just as much as being in front of it.

That is what being a multi-hyphenate creative is all about.

It is not about trying to be an expert at everything. It is about being curious enough to learn, brave enough to try something new, and open enough to see where one skill might lead you next. And honestly, that is how so many creative careers are being built today.

The lines between creative roles are constantly crossing. An actor may create their own content. A writer may learn to direct. An editor may become a producer. A filmmaker may need to understand social media and storytelling. A creative entrepreneur may find themselves writing, producing, speaking, marketing, teaching, and leading—all in the same week!

One skill leads to another, and suddenly your creative path looks completely different from what you originally imagined.

We see this happen all the time at JDS Creative Academy.

Someone may come to us because they love acting and then discover an interest in video production. Another student may start learning how to operate a camera and realize they have a great eye for directing. Someone else may sit down at an editing station for the first time and think, “Wait. I really like this.”

I love those moments because sometimes the thing you try just for fun becomes the thing that opens an entirely new door.

That is why I believe so strongly in giving people room to explore. Creative education should never be about putting someone into a box and saying, “This is the one thing you do.” It should give students opportunities to experiment, collaborate, ask questions, make mistakes, solve problems, and discover what they are capable of doing.

And that is where confidence starts growing.

The first time you pick up a camera, step onto a stage, open editing software, share an idea, or take responsibility for part of a production, you probably will not feel completely ready.

That is okay.

You learn by doing.

You try. You adjust. You ask questions. You learn from the people around you. Then you try again.

Before long, something that once felt intimidating becomes another skill you can carry with you.

At JDS Creative Academy, we want students to have those experiences. Through inclusive arts education, digital media education, visual and performing arts training, and workforce development through the arts, students can develop creative skills while also learning how to communicate, collaborate, meet deadlines, solve problems, take responsibility, and contribute to a team.

Those are not just artistic skills. They are real-world skills.

Our Fall Classes begin August 31, giving students a chance to jump in, try something new, build confidence, and grow their creative skills through hands-on experiences. And for those who love the stage, there is even more to look forward to. Auditions for Fiddler on the Roof are September 2! Our Musical Theater program brings so many creative skills together in one place—acting, singing, movement, storytelling, teamwork, discipline, and live performance. It is a perfect example of what being a multi-hyphenate creative can look like in action.

You may walk in interested in one thing and walk out having discovered five more things you can do.

My own creative journey has certainly never fit neatly into one title. I have worn many hats—producer, entrepreneur, educator, author, speaker, nonprofit founder, and more. Every role has taught me something that helped me with the next one. Sometimes I knew where I was going. Plenty of times, I did not.

That is part of the journey.

You do not need to have your entire creative future figured out today. Start with what interests you. Learn the skill in front of you. Stay curious. Be willing to be a beginner. And when an opportunity comes along that can help you grow, do not be afraid to explore it.

You may become an actor-director. A writer-producer. A filmmaker-editor. A creative entrepreneur. Or maybe you will build a career that does not even have the perfect title yet.

That is exciting.

So wear the hats. Learn the skills. Keep creating.

You never know which one might lead to your next big opportunity.
