The Creativity Crisis: Why Arts Education Matters More in the AI Era

AI is changing the way we work, create, communicate, and learn, and I believe that makes creativity more important, not less.

Technology can give us incredible tools. It can help us edit faster, brainstorm ideas, organize information, create images, and accomplish things that once took hours. But the tool is only as powerful as the person using it. We still need imagination. We still need original ideas. We still need people who know how to communicate, collaborate, solve problems, adapt, and think differently.

That is where arts education becomes so important.

Creativity has never been just about making something beautiful or learning how to perform on a stage. It is about learning how to approach a challenge when there is no obvious answer. It is about having the confidence to try something, make a mistake, adjust, and keep moving forward.

At JDS Creative Academy, we see this happening every day.

When a student steps into an acting class, they are not simply memorizing lines. They are learning how to listen, communicate, understand emotion, take direction, and connect with other people. When someone picks up a camera or works on a video production, they learn how many moving pieces have to come together to tell one story successfully.

Scriptwriting teaches students to organize ideas, develop their voice, and think about the person on the other side of the story. Backstage production teaches teamwork, preparation, responsibility, and how to solve problems when something does not go exactly as planned.

Those are creative skills, but they are also life skills.

The world of work is changing quickly. New technology will continue to appear, jobs will evolve, and the way we do business will keep shifting. We cannot always predict exactly what tools people will be using five or ten years from now. What we can do is help students develop the confidence and creative thinking skills they need to adapt.

That is one of the reasons arts education matters so much in the AI era.

AI may be able to generate an idea, but it cannot replace the personal experiences, perspectives, emotions, and connections that make each person unique. Technology can support the creative process, but we still need people who know how to ask the right questions, make thoughtful decisions, tell meaningful stories, and bring a human perspective to the work.

I have spent years working in television, media, entrepreneurship, education, and the arts, and I have seen firsthand how creativity can open doors. Sometimes those doors lead to performing or production. Sometimes they lead to leadership, entrepreneurship, communication, technology, or an entirely different career path.

That is why I have always believed that the arts are about so much more than becoming an artist.

Through visual arts, performing arts, digital media education, video production, acting, scriptwriting, and workforce development, students have opportunities to discover what they enjoy, what they are capable of, and where those skills might take them next.

We should not be afraid of new technology. We should learn how to use it while continuing to strengthen the very human skills that technology cannot replace.

Because at the end of the day, creativity is not disappearing.

It is becoming one of the most important skills we can teach.
